Scryway
A quiet place to study several contemplative practices side by side: tarot, the I Ching, runes, astrology, remote-viewing and Zener practice with honest scoring, meditation and dream work. Every session goes into a private journal.
- Role
- Everything: product, design, code
- Stack
- Next.js 15, React, TypeScript, Supabase
- Services
- Node ephemeris API wrapping the Swiss Ephemeris (AGPL)
- Testing
- Vitest, Playwright, axe-core
The idea
Scryway grew out of KnowTarot. Its reading engine, journal and offline foundations became the first module of a broader platform, where each practice is a module with its own engine, texts and scoring, and all of them share one account and one journal.
What I built
- Honest randomness. Casts and draws use the browser's cryptographic random source. The I Ching simulates the real odds of three coins or of yarrow stalks (changing yin 6.3%, changing yang 18.8%), and says which it is doing.
- Perception practice that can't be gamed. Remote-viewing targets are assigned and kept on the server until the session is locked, results are compared with chance, and a ranked mode uses an Elo-style rating.
- Real astronomy. Natal charts are calculated, not invented, by a separate service I wrote around the Swiss Ephemeris, published as open source under its AGPL licence. Every chart setting is stated and saved with the chart.
- A private journal. Every session from every practice lands in one journal, with optional encryption of entries in the browser.
- Texts. A library of sacred and classical texts, with the source and rights of each one listed.
Hard parts
- Many practices, one product. A module structure lets each practice keep its own logic while sharing accounts, the journal, the design system and the test harness.
- Licensing. The Swiss Ephemeris is dual-licensed. Running it as a separate open-source service keeps the AGPL obligations clear and the main app's code separate.
- Pace with quality. About 130 commits in the first nine days, with unit tests and browser tests, including accessibility checks, from the start.
Status
Scryway is in active development, with a public preview that search engines are asked not to index. It will move to its own domain at launch.
